TCSC / Case study

Laser-based flatness inspection

Dual laser profiling replaces a fixed-probe fixture for cast-aluminum automotive components.

The result

A simpler, more robust flatness inspection setup

Qualitative improvement reported; no measured speed increase supplied.

01 / The challenge

Key mounting zones on cast-aluminum components had to meet flatness requirements using a GD&T calculation. The original fixture used more than 30 fixed analog LVDT probes. The project aimed to modernize the technology and improve inspection speed and robustness.

‍

02 / The solution

TCSC designed three custom part nests and an overhead dual-laser profiling system. After the operator loads the nest and part and selects the HMI program, an electric actuator moves the part beneath the laser heads. The collected data is stitched together to calculate flatness. TCSC completed the design, fabrication and laser-system recipe creation.

‍

03 / The outcome

The system completed the required flatness inspection with a setup described as simpler and more robust than the original process. Delivered as a standalone station, it required no onsite installation.
